NHD Documentaries 2012

"This year's theme is Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History. The intentional selection of the theme for National History Day is to provide an opportunity for students to push past the antiquated view of history as mere facts and dates and drill down into historical content to develop perspective and understanding.

The NHD theme provides a focused way to increase student's historical understanding by developing a lens to read history, an organizational structure that helps students place information in the correct context and finally, the ability to see connections over time (www.nhd.org)."

The documentaries below were created during the 6th grade school day over the course of approximately 10 weeks. Some of the learning outcomes for students include:  identifying a theme-based topic, writing a thesis statement, writing a collaborative documentary script to support the thesis, story telling structure including the Hero's Journey, MLA citations, digital citizenship, fair use of media. Students used many online technology tools including ASD Google Docs, NetTrekker, SLED, Diigo, and Discovery Education. Students also used Mac software including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and Keynote.
