Mrs. Price's Summer Reading

I had a great time reading many of the books we will read in 8th grade language arts! Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen, and Peak, by Roland Smith, are both fascinating tales of survival and triumph over adversity. In Fever 1793, by Laurie Halse Anderson, a high school age girl tells the story of Philedelphia's survival against the yellow fever outbreak. In all of the books, including Animal Farm, Blood on the River, and A Midsummer Night's Dream, the hero of the story takes a journey with many twists and turns. I can't wait to talk about these stories in class!

I also enjoyed reading on the themes of leadership, our National History Day theme, and happiness, a topic many researchers and scientists are studying. Did you know that people learn more when they are happy learning?  I read Talk Like Ted, by Carmine Gallo. Talk Like Ted describes how ted.com presenters craft their presentations for maximum impact. In class, we'll be crafting our presentations using the excellent advice from Talk Like Ted. I also read Delivering Happiness, by Zappos.com CEO Tony Hsieh, which tells Zappo's story and why happiness is a core value for their company.

If your reading this, Thank You! If you're a student, please think about your first book blog entry. I'm looking forward to hearing more about you're reading interests. ~ Mrs. Price
